Professional teeth whitening performed at a dentist's office provides a whiter, brighter smile than you can achieve with over-the-counter products alone. While home whitening kits contain less than 20% peroxide, professional teeth whitening solutions can contain up to 43% peroxide.
We also take steps to protect the gum tissue from irritation and damage caused by bleaching agents, a common complication of home tooth whitening. For an in-office treatment, expect your appointment to last about 60 to 90 minutes.
First, we note the current shade of your tooth's enamel so we can better monitor the results of this dental treatment. Then, we remove plaque and polish the surface of your teeth to prepare the enamel for the whitening procedures. Retractors and gauze protect the oral tissue during the cosmetic dentistry appointment.
After preparing your mouth for the most effective whitening treatment, we apply the hydrogen peroxide solution to the front of the teeth. This special whitening toothpaste solution remains on the tooth enamel for about 60 minutes. We activate the whitening products with a curing light to improve the expected results.
When we reach the maximum time limit, we remove the solution and apply fluoride to prevent sensitivity in the days following the procedure. Depending on the extent of the discolored teeth, we may have to schedule more than one session to achieve your desired professional teeth whitening results.
Foods and beverages can dim your luminous smile by staining the enamel and creating a yellow or brown discoloration. Aging can also cause the teeth to appear darker as the white outer enamel wears down over time. Certain prescription drugs, including blood pressure, antipsychotic and antihistamine medications, and chemotherapy, can discolor the teeth.
Tooth whitening treatment can often produce dramatic results for patients who have mild yellow or light brown discoloration. If your teeth have brown stains, you may be a good candidate if you want to whiten the tone of your teeth by a few shades. Dark purple or gray stains do not respond to the bleaching solution.
When you want brighter teeth, professional tooth whitening provides superior results than at-home whitening trays and solutions. Depending on your overall oral health and other factors, professional whitening products can lighten the tone of your brilliant smile by up to eight shades.
To preserve the results of professional teeth whitening, you should avoid staining beverages, foods, and substances such as tobacco, wine, beets, berries, sauces, sports drinks, tomatoes, tea, and coffee. It is most important to abstain from strongly hued foods for at least 24 hours after your teeth whitening appointment.
Complications rarely occur when you rely on professional teeth whitening procedures rather than home bleaching toothpaste or trays. However, some people experience sensitivity to heat, cold, or pressure resulting from extended exposure to the bleaching agent.
