5 Common Types of Dental Crowns

Restoring damaged or decayed teeth typically involves an artificial replacement, one of which is dental crowns. These prostheses are placed over an existing tooth or an abutment from an implant procedure. Besides repairs, dental crowns may also be used for cosmetic purposes to improve your smile and overall facial appearance.

There are several materials used for dental crowns. Here are some of the most common types:

• All-Porcelain Crowns

Also called all-ceramic crowns, these are highly popular as they closely resemble natural teeth. Porcelain crowns are highly biocompatible and do not cause allergic reactions, making them a suitable choice for people with metal allergies. Since these can be color-matched to your real teeth, they are often used in cosmetic procedures.

• Metal Crowns

These are typically made from gold and platinum alloys. Metal crowns are known for their strength and durability, as they can withstand chewing and biting. Despite these qualities, their appearance is not the most aesthetically pleasing, so it’s not ideal to replace visible teeth. Metal crowns can be quite expensive, so you may need to reconsider getting them if you’re on a tight budget.

• Zirconia Crowns

Another strong and durable option is zirconia crowns. They are resistant to chips and cracks and can also mimic your natural teeth’s color, although not as closely as porcelain crowns due to their opaque appearance. Still, zirconia is a great choice if you’re looking for durability and don’t want a metallic look.

• Stainless Steel Crowns

Stainless steel crowns are prefabricated and are generally used as protection for baby teeth that are severely damaged or have undergone a root canal. These are only used temporarily until a permanent replacement has been made.

• All-Resin Crowns

This is the least expensive option out of all the dental crown types. All-resin crowns are made of plastic-based composite material that can be matched to your teeth’s natural color. Despite their affordability, however, these crowns are more susceptible to damage.
